PERJURY

I tell you the Truth,

It’s official!  For those of you attending Greater Beckley Christian School, I’ll be speaking at your Junior-Senior Banquet on May 2.  So if don’t have your “date” lined up, better start thinking about it soon!  I’m really looking forward to seeing you there!  (Oh, and be sure to tell Ms. Parvin that Randy said hello!  :- )

<*))))))<   <*))))))<   <*))))))<   <*))))))<   <*))))))<

Committing perjury is the act of lying (or not telling the truth) while under oath.  This act is committed when someone is called in as a witness and perjures themselves by knowingly answering a question in a false manner.

One thing that happens when someone is caught lying under oath, or committing perjury, is that the rest of that witness’s testimony is worthless.  It just can't be used in a court of law.  Once perjured, the witness's testimony is thrown out.

And while we're speaking of the law, listen as Paul tells young Timothy about the law and what it is good for.

1 Timothy 1:
8
We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. 9We also know that law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious; for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10for adulterers and perverts, for slave traders and liars and perjurers--and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine 11that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.

Wow, this perjury thing is pretty serious when you think about the company it keeps!  The law is made for rebels, murderers, adulterers, perverts, liars and perjurers.  Perjury is a serious thing.  The Lord detests liars as he detests murderers and adulterers.

Now, it's time to put myself to the test.  Come with me back in time.  I find myself in the courtroom.  It is time for me to examine myself.  Am I able to step up to the witness stand?  You see, I claim to know the accused.  I claim to be an eye witness to the actions of the one on trial.  Let's join in and listen to the latest developments.

Matthew 26:
57Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome.
59The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward.
Finally two came forward 61and declared, "This fellow said, `I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.' "

62
Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?" 63But Jesus remained silent.

The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God."

What a scene.  Looks like the prosecution has loaded itself with witnesses.  Perjurers.  Paid liars.  In all fairness, Jesus should have had many witnesses himself.  Yet I, like Peter, sat on the back row and watched.  I, like Peter, had full understanding of who Jesus is, the Son of God.  I, like Peter, had told Jesus that I believe He is the son of God, yet we both sit, silently.  While we watch perjurer after perjurer testify, we remain silent.  In essence, we perjure ourselves with our non-testimony.

You see friend, the trial continues today.  God's word says that Satan continues to accuse Christians day and night.  False accusations continue from the accuser.  And we continue to be the only witnesses who can tell about the Truth, the whole Truth and nothing but the Truth.  Christ is the Truth, the Way and the Life.  When we sit on the back row and continue to remain silent, we are a non-witness and have no better testimony than those who perjure themselves about who Jesus truly is.

So how did our courtroom drama unveil?  See for yourself.

64"Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven."
65Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66What do you think?"
"He is worthy of death," they answered.
67Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him 68and said, "Prophesy to us, Christ. Who hit you?"
69Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. "You also were with Jesus of Galilee," she said.
70
But he denied it before them all. "I don't know what you're talking about," he said

Today the trial continues.  Who will stand and testify?

Your Servant,

Randy Hunt

Prayer Requests (and Praises!):
Once again, I thank all of you for your continued prayers for my father.  He's doing well and has about a 8 radiation treatments left.  God continues to work in his life and I continue to feel a peace about his spiritual life.  Please keep praying.  Thanks again!
