DESPERATE

I tell you the Truth,

Psalm 142
5 I cry to you, O LORD;
I say, "You are my refuge,
my portion in the land of the living."
6 Listen to my cry,
for I am in desperate need;
rescue me from those who pursue me,
for they are too strong for me.
7 Set me free from my prison,
that I may praise your name.
Then the righteous will gather about me
because of your goodness to me.

Thus wrote David - the same David that slew the giant, that killed the lion with his own hands, and was famed throughout Israel as a hero.  The lament of this scripture comes from a David on the run, at the end of his rope, desperately in need of rescue.

David had done nothing to deserve the treatment he was receiving from the mad King Saul.  Saul’s jealousy toward the young hero led David to hide in caves in fear of loosing his life.  David finds himself hopelessly dependent upon God and God alone.

There are times in our lives when we feel like there is no one who can help us, no one who can reach us.  It’s lonely and it’s frightening.  It’s a desperate place to be, yet perhaps a perfect place to be – if we’re wholly and fully dependent upon God.

Is it by chance or by the force of evil that David was chased into hiding?  I don’t believe so.  I believe that God allowed the madness of King Saul to bring David to the point of total dependence upon the only One he should have depended upon in the first place.

David’s cry to God serves as a message to himself that he is a man in need and will also serve as a reminder in the future that his need for God will never cease – his need should not be less tomorrow than it is today.

David’s cry should remind us also of our need for utter and total dependence upon a faithful and caring God.  Perhaps you’ve been there too – at the end of your rope, crying out to God in desperation.  If so, I pray you also understand the faithfulness of God to hear your prayer and rescue you.

Unfortunately, our problem often isn’t that we’re desperate when things are unbearable.  Quite often our problem is that we fail to remember our need for dependence when things are going well.

When we forget our need for dependence, we begin to lean upon our own understanding, our own strength and our own abilities which are totally contrary to how God has designed us and what He intends for us.

Proverbs 3
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight.

There’s a popular praise song which lyrics, “I’m desperate for You.”

Being desperate for God should not be a last resort.  It should be a way of life, a daily attitude.

Are you desperate for Him today?  If not, have you asked yourself why?  Have you become self sufficient again?  If so, what will you stand on when the bottom falls out?

Let me encourage you to find your desperation for Christ again.  Remember the desperate times and continue to realize your need.

And when we do, He will prove Himself faithful again and again.  He will make our paths straight and level.

Get desperate.

Randy Hunt

A friend of mine has this close friend named Angela. She has diabetes and it has severely damaged her eye sight. So please remember her and her family in your prayers.
