YOU BETTER THINK I tell you the Truth, Every day, I awake and ask the Lord to
guide my steps, protect me from evil and use me for His service. Since God
is always faithful, does this mean that I can relax once I pray this prayer and
expect Him to take care of me in every way? In other words, can I
mindlessly journey through the day allowing the Lord to lead me as though I were
some kind of zombie? Sometimes I think we believe this.
I’ve asked God to take complete control, so I can go through the rest of the
day without even having to think about my role in being used by God. The
reality is that being a child of God is not a mindless life style. While
encountering the power of God’s Spirit may be an emotional experience, emotion
is a result of our understanding, not the other way around. Ultimately, my
relationship with Jesus Christ is found in my understanding of Him, not in my
emotional encounter with Him. The deepest desire of my heart is know Him
better than I know anyone else. To know Him is what builds my relationship with Him. And truly, this is what Christianity is all about. It is not about religion, emotion or being controlled. It is simply about having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. And Proverbs gives us great insight to understanding this relationship. Proverbs 2: 9Then
you will understand what is right and just Accept the words. This is where
your relationship begins to strengthen – by accepting the Word of God so that
you will begin to understand His ways. There is great protection, as we
just read in knowledge of God and understanding and discernment. “But I thought we were to hide the
Word in our heart, not our head?” Yes, in the heart. Like our
physical heart, the spiritual heart feeds the entire body. We’re to hide
the Word in our heart because it continuously feeds the entire body, while the
mind concentrates on one thing at a time. The heart feeds the brain, so
when we hide the Word in our heart, it feeds the mind continuously. The mind is where our decisions are
made and that is why we are to seek wisdom and understanding. We are to
think about the things of God. Once we hide the Word in our heart and use
that Word to think on the things of God, we will find the protection that God
has promised in the Proverb. Paul hits the nail on the head in his
letter to the church at Philippians 4: Use your head today. Think about
these things. Allow the attributes of God to posses your thoughts.
And the God of peace will be with you.
