GOTTA HAVE FAITH I tell you the Truth, As we approach Thanksgiving, I thank God for the greatest gift any being could give – Himself. Not only did the Creator give Himself, but He also made salvation for you and me a simple step. Only God could offer salvation through simply believing. It’s through this belief that we can discover what faith is. What is faith? Ask a dozen people on the corner and you’ll get a dozen different answers. Personally, I grew up with this image of “faith” that “if God will answer this prayer, I promise to do whatever you ask.” That was my faith. Unfortunately, that’s not faith. That’s bargaining. I believe in God, the Creator of all things. I know He can do what He says. But it takes faith to act upon that belief. So often we want to test God for validity. “If you can prove that you are who you say you are, then I will believe you in all things,” we often think. Unfortunately, this is not faith. Faith is thinking, “I believe you are who you say you are and I believe you in all things.” Faith begins with the thought of belief, but doesn’t stop there. When faith stops with belief, then faith becomes dead. The most important aspect of faith is what proceeds from faith – faithfulness. You see, the whole idea of faith is that it will lead to faithfulness, which is the action which follows the belief. There is also a key element to this whole scenario of faith – the action is in obedience no matter what the outcome is. Let’s take a look at what we mean here.
Hebrews 11: Chapter 11 of Hebrews goes on praising the great heroes of faith from the Old Testament. You see, faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Faith requires obedience, even when the outcome doesn’t look favorable. Faithfulness is acting upon the unknown. And faithfulness leads to something better than we could ever imagine. Faith leads to acting on God’s commands, no matter what the odds or what the outcome. It was through faith that Jesus Christ remained obedient to His Father, accepting our punishment on a cross that should have been made for us. Because of His faithfulness, Jesus putting his faith into action, we are able to receive salvation through Christ. God is faithful all the time. Are you being prompted by the Holy Spirit? Is God leading you into a place where you are at a crossroad decision, a decision that requires your faith to be put into action? Will you be faithful? I promise you this – if God is calling your name and leading you, be faithful, take that step. Because He is always faithful and it’s only when you put your faith into action that you’ll be able to see the unseen things that God has in store for you. Press on. Be faithful.
