Security Alert

I tell you the Truth,

Blacksburg, Virginia is less than two hours from our home.  I actually had one of my employees in Blacksburg on Monday.  He was near the local hospital when the sirens began to wail.

Being an avid West Virginia University fan, the Hokies of Virginia Tech have long been a border rival.  I’ve spent several October afternoons in Blacksburg watching our football teams duke it out.

But the events of Monday morning have caused us all to put away our rivalries, to stop and reflect on the important things of life and to show love for “our enemies” like never before.

So many questions hit our minds at times like these.  Why would someone commit such reprehensible actions toward unknown innocent people?  Could such a horrible circumstance been avoided?  Were signs missed that could have prevented this massacre?  Was everything done that could have been done to prevent such destruction?  Are our schools as secure as they need to be?  If you’ve been watching the news, these questions have been presented over and over.

And some answers may be eventually given.  New measures will surely be taken.  Higher and savvier security will be considered for many schools and places of business.  Maybe, just maybe, the next time a crazed mind attempts a mass murder, we’ll be able to minimize his or her damage.

Yet, while we consider all these things, we also have to ascertain that there can be no mechanism guaranteeing us 100% security.  We can try as we like, but the fact remains that as long as we have freedom to roam about our great nation, we are at the mercy of those who desire to rob us of life and peace of mind.

On the other hand, those of us who know the Lord, who have accepted His grace and mercy through Christ, have a security in place that cannot be breached, can never be thwarted.  Through Christ, you and I have been given assurance that we are not only safe, but also secure.

2 Corinthians 4:
7But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. 8We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. 11For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body. 12So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.
13It is written: "I believed; therefore I have spoken."  With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak, 14because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his presence. 15All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.
16Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Today, we should all mourn with the families and friends of those who have lost such dear loved ones.  But even through our mourning, we can have peace.  As we consider the eternal things of this life, we have assurance that they are secure in Christ.

Christ has assured you and I that he is with us, will never forsake us.  We have an eternal destination with him that no gun man, no crazed murderer can steal from us.

I pray that many of those who were slain knew Him before their last breath.  I have hope that many did.  Heather, a former youth at our church attended Va. Tech a few years ago.  She’s told me about the Campus Crusade for Christ there in Blacksburg, which would garner 1,500 students at their weekly services.  We should pray that this number doubles and triples in the coming weeks.

What Satan intends for evil, God can use for good.  Join me and pray for those who are struggling with eternal issues today.  May the Spirit of God speak to them personally and reveal what true security really is.

Your Servant,
