DISTURBED I tell you the Truth, It’s Monday, my first of four days of management classes this week. The class is titled “Organizations Don’t Change, People Do.” Within five minutes of the opening lecture, God got my attention when the instructor mouthed the following words, “As a manger, coach and teach your major function is to disturb people.” I must say that my initial reaction was quite disturbing. But as disturbing as it was initially, I began to think about the truth of the statement and began to understand the deeper meaning. Disruption can be a bad thing, but it can also be a good thing. Not only can disruption be a good thing, it can be a necessary thing.
Daniel 7: Daniel had a disturbing dream, sent to him by God with deep warning and prophecies. God uses disruptions in our lives to get our attention at times, to alert us, to bring us into action. Disruption can stir us up and motivate us. This type of disruption is good. But the problem you and I often have with being disturbed is that we don’t care if it’s good or bad, we just don’t like it. Perhaps the most disruptive person of all history was the person of Jesus Christ. When you think about it, Jesus disrupts more people in more ways than we can imagine. He walks by fishermen and says, “Lay down your nets and follow me.” He approaches the self-righteous religious leaders and calls them “vipers” and “hypocrites.” Most of all, Jesus Christ continues to disrupt us when we need it. His Spirit convicts our complacent hearts, rattles us when we go astray and shakes our souls when we turn out backs on our God. But for every disruption God brings into our life, there is a wonderfully deep purpose.
Romans 8 God works ALL things for the good of those who love Him, including the deepest disruptions to our calm lives. When God moves you to be disturbed, understand that His greatest motive is a simple one. He wants to draw you closer to Himself, so that you might more fully know Him and more fully rest in His peace and grace. Disruptions bring about change. God desires us to be awake and alert and sometimes we need change. Let’s face it, we just don’t like disruptions. But if a buzzer goes off while you sleep and you awaken to find your house on fire, you can thank that fire alarm for saving your life. When we become spiritually sleepy God sometimes disrupts our lives in order to awaken us, to stir us up and to lead us out of our complacency. Just like the fire alarm, we have a choice. We can try to doze back off to sleep. Or we can jump and act. So don’t doze back off when you’re disturbed. And recognize that God may be leading you through a change – a change that might save you from disaster.
