In Remembrance I tell you the Truth, I’d like to announce a few items before we begin today. First of all, Truth Works Devotions has teamed up with Blake Porter, a Texas evangelist who will be sharing his writings with us through our devotion mailing list. I’m excited for you to experience the thought provoking and cutting edge ministry that God has blessed Blake with. We’ll begin alternating Blake’s messages with my own after today’s message. Second, I’d like to thank all those who’ve been praying for Mountain State University and the newly formed Campus Crusade for Christ here in Beckley Check out our website! (www.everyMSUCougar.com). God is doing an amazing work and we’re excited to see where He takes us next. Continue praying for the students and the ministry as God guides us. <*))))))< <*))))))< <*))))))< <*))))))< <*))))))< Occasionally, a significant event burns itself into our minds. As a very small child, I remember the assassination of John F. Kennedy. I remember it because of the effect I saw it having on the adults around me. I didn’t understand what was actually happening, but I found it frightening to see grown people cry and to hear that the president had been shot and was dead. One of those events that most everyone reading this remembers occurred six years ago today. I’m guessing that you remember exactly where you were at. I was at work at my desk in Charleston when a co-worker fixed the rabbit ears on a TV and we gathered around just in time to see the second plane hit the World Trade center. No one said anything at first. We weren’t sure what to say. We couldn’t comprehend what was taking place. It made no sense. It was like one of those vivid full color dreams. It was like watching a well done disaster movie. 9/11 will forever be burned into my mind. There is no way to escape the thoughts of remembrance when that date rolls around on the calendar. I remember instant messaging a few friends on the computer that day. We were all stunned and confused on what to do, where to go. I remember the news saying that another plane had been high jacked and was flying over West Virginia. Surely, if this was a terrorist attack, they wouldn’t attack Charleston, WV. Or would they? We just didn’t know. So I left work and drove home – watching the skies and wondering what was really going on. It seems that God has programmed our minds to grasp onto those moments in our lives that stun us. Those moments of massive adrenaline seem to hang in our minds like no other. And since God seems to have programmed us that way, I’m sure He had a purpose, a reason that he wanted us to remember. Perhaps that reason and purpose is so that we might share with others in the future what we experienced in the past. Memory is important. Remembering is part of God’s plan for man. The word “remember” is in the bible more than 150 times. It is first mentioned in the book of Genesis when God sent a rainbow after the great flood and Noah said, “Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth." Jesus told His disciples over and over to “remember.” Whether it was to remember what he told them in a parable, to remember what a prophet of old had said or whether to remember a miracle that He had performed, Jesus was serious about us using our memory. Unfortunately, we do not always remember. And for that reason, we must be reminded to remember. And I find no greater reminder to remember than that of Paul to young Timothy:
2 Timothy 2
