LETTER TO AMY

I tell you the Truth,

I’m doing something unusual today.  With her permission, I’m sharing a letter that I’ve written to my new born-again baby sister Amy.  Amy attends our local college and is heading off to boot camp in the spring.  We won’t see her again till next fall so I wanted to give her some words to take with her.

“Dear Amy,

It’s been astonishing to see God pursue you and to see your heart open up to Jesus.  It was so cool to see the excitement in your eyes as you were baptized.  That excitement is contagious and I thank God for allowing me to share in that.

I’m writing you because you’re family now, and as family we must watch out for one another, care for one another, encourage one another and, sometimes, correct one another.  You’ve been adopted into the family and that adoption is eternal.  Cool, eh?

As your new big brother, I want you to know that I’ve gone down a lot of different paths in my life and learned a few things along the way (usually the hard way).  One thing I’ve discovered is that God allows us to experience certain things so we can share with others.  So be aware of your experiences, because before long, you’re going to be sharing too.

Perhaps the greatest thing I have to offer you is that you are not alone.  Our God is large and in charge.  Nothing you endure in life is bigger than God.  No challenge you will ever face is too difficult for our God.  No mountain, no valley, no distance, no flood and no fire can outreach the arm of the omnipotent God that cares for us.  Remember this when you think the whole world has turned its back on you.  He is faithful and He is available.

In that same light, listen to wise men, but don’t put all your faith in them.  In this world, we have to trust people to a degree, but ultimately, your trust is best served in God first.  Like Jesus said in John 14:1, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.”

So trust God first in all things.  People, even those you admire and trust (yeah, even me, your big brother), will fail you and let you down from time to time.  We’re imperfect in this flesh.  But God will never fail you.

I encourage you to spend your days in prayer.  Don’t allow God to become someone you see on occasion.  Make Him a companion and include Him as much as possible in your daily walk.  The bible instructs us to “pray without ceasing.”  Simply put, that means for us to walk and talk with Him all the time.  Most people would be surprised what that can do to make every day a day of peace.

Read your bible as much and as often as God allows you.  A wise man once told me to write this simple phrase in the front of my bible – “This book will keep you from sinning, or sinning will keep you from this book.”

Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”  This world is dark.  Don’t try to walk through it without any light.  And that light is only found in His word – the Bible.

Coach John Wooden once wrote, “Live your life as if you’ll die today but prepare as if you’ll live forever.”  If you knew today was your last day, how would you treat others?  If it were your last day, what would you leave behind?  Those are questions I’m learning to ask myself.

On the other hand, we don’t know when our last day will be, so we have to prepare to live as if we’ll live forever.  God instructs us in Matthew 6:19-20, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.”

Use the days that God gives you to store up real treasures.  You’ll find that the eternal treasures are the things you give, not the things you get.  Be anxious to give of yourself to others.  That treasure is eternal and you’ll be blessed in the process.

Keep your eyes on Jesus.  Never compare yourself to other Christians.  We are not the example, not the standard to set your life against.  Jesus Christ is the standard for all things.  His life is the only one lived to perfection.  For that reason, Jesus says, “Follow Me.”  When your lost friends question Christianity because they see Christians who are imperfect, remember that Christianity is not based on Christians, it’s based on Christ.

Lastly, press on no matter what.  Never let your past keep you down.  Always remember that in the end, we win and our hope is perfect in the person of Jesus.

Philippians 3:12-14, “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.  Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

Welcome to the family Amy.  You are forever my sister.  That rocks my world.

Love In Christ, Big Brother Randy”

Your Servant,

Randy Hunt
