Deceived I tell you the Truth, My family, along with our friends the Bryant’s, made a quick trip to Washington, D.C. during spring break. I’ve always enjoyed visiting historic places and it was the first time my children had seen our nation’s capitol. I knew the trip would be educational, but I didn’t realize it would turn out to be so eventful. During our stay,
there was plenty of While witnessing world culture up close was exciting, what happened next was beyond anything I thought we’d encounter. It was Friday morning, April 21. My son, Aaron, and I had left our group to visit the boy’s restroom as the others went ahead to pick up some breakfast goodies. While trying to locate the rest of our unofficial entourage, Aaron and I were approached with a most exciting request. A man asked if Aaron would be willing to pose for a photo with our country’s president. Yes, my son was being asked to have his picture taken with President George W. Bush. Our answer? Absolutely!
What a thrill it was for Aaron to show the rest of our family and friends his picture of him shaking the President of the United States of America’s hand. Now, as thrilled as I am to tell you about our adventure, I’m equally aprhensive to let you in on a little secret. My son never shook the president’s hand. We were not in the presence of the president nor did we even come close to seeing him. But with that said, I must also tell you that everything in the story I just told you is factual and true - and extremely misleading. We were in DC and Aaron was approached to have his picture made. But it was a trick photo that cost me five dollars. Deception is not difficult to pull off. We’re all prone to be deceived, which is the reason God warns us throughout His Word to be on guard against deception. We need to be particularly awake to deception in the “last days.” 2 Timothy 3: Evil men will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. Deceived people often lead others to deception. This is point of my writing today. To help you understand that a deceived man by the name of Dan Brown wrote a novel concerning documents of deception called “The DaVinci Code.” Most of you have already heard about the book or perhaps read it. The movie taken from the novel is due in theaters on the 19th of this month. Before anyone says that I’m taking this book and movie too seriously, let me say that I’ve read the novel from cover to cover. I know the book and all it contains. Like my twisted tale above, Dan Brown has taken particles of fact and twisted them into fiction. The problem with his fiction is that he professes to believe in the scenario behind his book – that Jesus Christ was nothing more than a great prophet, that he was married to Mary Magdalene and that he and Mary bore children. Unfortunately, everything he basis his assumptions on have already been discredited. There is even one man in prison in France for forging documents that Dan Brown believes are legitimate. I will admit that the tale woven by Mr. Brown is spell binding. He leaves you hanging on every word and shocks you over and over throughout the murder mystery. His fiction is well written and very convincing. Now, to your surprise, my point in bringing up The DaVinci Code is not to convince you or anyone else to never see the movie or read the book. That’s your business. Actually, my real reason for talking about The DaVinci Code is that people everywhere will be talking about this movie in the coming weeks. Some will call it great art. Some will call it demonic. Some will just be curious. Regardless of what people will think, people will be talking – and God may just open a few doors for you to talk too. The reason I read the book was because an unsaved friend of mine asked me last month about the movie. He wanted to know what it was about and he knew that I was a Christian. At that time I had no idea. But I do know that God can use anything for His glory that He desires – even things that are pure evil. Perhaps God will use this movie to open doors that would never have been opened. I encourage you to not be deceived. At the same time, I encourage you to pray that the Spirit might equip you to answer the questions that may come your way in the coming weeks. 2 John 1:
