BOB HUNT (1936-2004)

I tell you the Truth,

Hunts: Lisa, Alyssa, Randy, Aaron, Bob, Ethan, Cristina, Jeff, Jonathan
One the day of his baptism.

It was about 8:20pm this past Friday night (February 27) when my dad, Bobbie D. Hunt, took his last breath of mortality and his first of immortality.  He’s now experiencing things that I cannot even fathom.  My father is now knows what my hope rests in – an eternal audience with God.

If you’ve been with me for the past year, you’ve heard me talk about my father’s battle with brain cancer.  I’m here to testify to you that the cancer lost the battle.  And my father won.

In January, I reported my dad’s salvation and then his baptism.  But there’s one thing that I haven’t shared with you.  I want to share what happened in the days following my dad’s unbelievable new life.

First of all, it’s important to understand my father’s physical condition at the time he accepted the gracious salvation through faith in Christ.  His mental state was not good.  He couldn’t tell you who left the room thirty seconds ago.  He couldn’t find his way across the room to the door on the other side.

But the day he accepted Christ, it wasn’t a mental thing that occurred, it was a heart change.  My father’s life immediately changed from the inside out.  He couldn’t love people enough.  He couldn’t thank people for praying for him enough.  He wanted to pray for everyone.  He talked about reaching out to young people and children in order to show them how much God loved them.

Within about three weeks of my father being born again, his little ministry practically came to an end.  He got to the point that he couldn’t walk and eventually could barely talk.

But within those three weeks, dad went around the floor of the VA hospital testifying about his baptism and letting people know how wonderful it was and how they needed to get right with God.  It was a stunning time for us all who’ve prayed for so long.

While that was exciting, there is more good news.  During dad’s baptism an older gentleman was present.  It was my father’s wife’s long lost uncle, whom she hadn’t seen in forty years.  It was a “chance” happening that she met up with her uncle, who was staying on the same floor as my dad.  But my God leaves nothing to chance.  I believe it was predetermined before creation that Uncle Mason would meet up with his long lost niece at this time because Mason needed something more in his life.

And it was about a week after dad’s baptism that a pastor approached Mason in his room.  And Mason accepted the same gift that my father had accepted only days earlier.

I know beyond any doubt that God used my dad to impact Mason and open his eyes to his own need for a Savior.

Acts 1:
8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

When we accept the gift of salvation, we are also heirs to receive the power of the Holy Spirit in order that we might be witnesses to the ends of the earth.

My father’s “ends of the earth” was the fourth floor of the Beckley VA hospital.  It was his territory to reach out.  And in the few short days he had left to reach out, his heart wanted to do nothing but honor God and serve Him.

My father was just a new born babe in the Lord.  I’ve been born again for over thirty years.  I wonder how many countless opportunities I’ve missed in allowing the power of the Holy Spirit to work in my life?  I wonder how often my own sin has quenched the Spirit in my life?

I don’t know how long you’ve known Christ.  But I’ve witnessed what God can do through one man in only a few short weeks.

My father didn’t have much time.  And his rewards may not amount to much.  But what would be even sadder is to think about so many of us who have had a great deal of time and may even have fewer rewards.

Life is brief.  We’re not promised tomorrow.  We’re not even promised our next breath.

I pray that God is pricking your heart today.  He’s calling you to reach out so someone.  Maybe you already know who it is.  But you don’t know what to say or how to even approach them.  That’s ok.  Remember, it’s not about you anyway.  It’s the Spirit of God who will lead you and it is He who will speak to their hearts.

So pray with me today that God will use you.  Be willing to be His vessel.

And allow His power to empower you.

Your Servant,

Randy Hunt

Prayer Requests (and Praises!)

I don’t have room to list all the people I would like to thank for the prayers and encouragement I’ve received especially in the past year with my father’s cancer.  I’m blessed beyond measure to have so many people around the world who’ve written me and told me that they are praying.  I thank God for his faithfulness and His willingness to hear our prayers and answer them in ways we would never dream.  My family and I deeply thank you all.
