CALLING ALL SINNERS

I tell you the Truth,

Several days ago, one of my college students shared an encounter she had in an elevator in her dorm.  She was returning to her room with a music CD on top of her books.  Another student hopped aboard the elevator with her and asked, “What CD do you have in our hand.”  She replied, “The Passion of The Christ.”  He then said, with a chuckle, “Yea, my friends and I watch that movie and play a game.  We drink one shot glass each time they hit Jesus until we get bombed.”

My friend was shocked by the mockery of this boy.  I was deeply shocked by the story myself and had a difficult time getting this young man out of my head.  For the next few days, the arrogance of this guy troubled me, made me angry and finally made me sad.

I say it made me angry because his attitude reminded me once again of the mockery that Christ took on the trail to the cross, the taunting and laughing.  It’s difficult to stand by as the innocent is ridiculed for no reason.

And I say that my anger turned to sadness because I finally realized that Christ died not only for my sake, but for the sake of this young man in the elevator who mocks even the thought of gracious God.

There are times when God allows evil to dance before our eyes in order to wake us up from our slumber.  Sometimes it takes something as shocking as a punk in an elevator to shake us up.

It’s something Jesus not only taught, but exhibited with His life.

Matthew 9:
9As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth.
"Follow me," he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
10While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and "sinners" came and ate with him and his disciples. 11When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?"
12On hearing this, Jesus said,
"It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."

It’s easy for us to judge and condemn the lost.  Yet every time we encounter the evil in this world and respond in judgment and condemnation, we loose another opportunity to reach the lost.

Let’s get real and honest today.  We would much rather share the “good news” with one another in youth groups and bible studies.  But is that the ministry that Christ established?  Jesus never boxed His ministry into a room or a building, but took it to the streets and cities.  He called for the sinners, not the righteous.

You and I have the good news, the life giving message of hope.  Do we hide that message within our fortress or hand it out to the ones who need to hear?

Verse 13 says to “go and learn what this means.”  It doesn’t say, understand what this means and keep it to your self.

I don’t know the young man’s name in the elevator but God does.  Please do me a favor and let’s pray for this soul.  Pray that the Spirit of God will touch his heart and bring the conviction he needs to seek and understand truth.

Your Servant,

Prayer Requests (and Praises!)

If you have a prayer request and would like to see it here, please drop me an email so we can share with others.

There are two young college students who came through Judgment House this past weekend that are considering the reality of Christ.  Both are Buddhists and I’ve had the chance to spend some time with one of them.  Please pray for Amy and Kai.  I believe both these young people are being drawn by the Spirit of God.

Also, please continue to pray for my long time friend Mike Martin who is recovering from surgery due to breast cancer.  Mike had a complete mastectomy Friday and is doing well.  Yes, men get breast cancer too.

And keep praying for our election and our country today!
-Randy

Please reply if you have prayer requests, comments or simply need an open ear. I always enjoy hearing from you.
